Many SaskPower customers who pay their bills in person will soon have to find another option. The Crown corporation announced beginning June 1 the cash counters in Regina, Saskatoon, North Battleford and Yorkton will close.

SaskPower says only eight per cent of customers are still using the cash counters to pay their bills.

“Our customers’ habits have changed significantly over the last 10 years,” Diane Avery, SaskPower Vice-President of Customer Services said in a media release. “This shift will allow us to keep wait times low, as most of our customers now prefer to handle their transactions electronically or over the phone.”

There are nine people currently employed at the counters. Starting this summer they will move to serving customers over the phone and responding to inquiries from customers paying via the website.

Customers who still prefer to pay in person can do so at their local bank.

SaskPower will maintain operation centres in Regina, Saskatoon, North Battleford and Yorkton to address outages and grid maintenance.

The cash counter in Prince Albert will remain open.
