The union representing respiratory therapists in Saskatchewan is warning of what it's calling an impending crisis.

The Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan says the province's health care system is suffering from a chronic shortage of respiratory therapists, with 17 positions currently vacant.

It claims the shortage has had health officials threatening to cancel pediatric and neonatal transports in Saskatoon and Regina because no therapists were available to cover shifts.

The union warns the problem will get worse later this year when a new hospital opens in Calgary, creating more than 80 new respiratory therapist jobs.
