Police are investigating the deaths of two men whose bodies were discovered at a landfill in southwestern Saskatchewan.
Around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, RCMP responded to a report of two people who were possibly deceased at the Ponteix landfill, located about six kilometres east of the town.
When officers arrived, they found the bodies of two men, both seniors. RCMP have not released the names of the deceased, but CTV News has identified one of them as Ponteix landfill operator Mike Kucik.
“Looking after the town dump and everything like he did, there’s just no other clean one like that around,” said Ponteix resident Louis Laverdiere.
“He was the best there was, always.”
Kucik was well known in provincial boxing circles, having coached for more than 50 years.
“He was going to make them go up and help them out to the best of his ability. And it came from his heart,” said Gisele St. Cyr, who also lives in town.
Kucik coached in Swift Current and Ponteix. Over the decades, he trained hundreds of boxers, and he was still coaching at the time of his death.
Sources say the two deceased men knew each other. RCMP Major Crimes Unit South is assisting in the investigation. Autopsies are scheduled for Wednesday.
Mounties in the region are also investigating another death after the body of a man was found at a home in Swift Current on Thursday. Few details on that death have been released. An autopsy will take place Monday.
