The grey skies have now given way to clearer conditions, but it was a wild weather night for many, as strong gusts of wind tore through the southern part of the province. Many regions saw wind gusts of more than 100 kilometres an hour.

Regina was under a wind warning for the majority of Tuesday evening -- with the gusts causing chaos.

The strong winds forced organizers to cancel the Queen City Ex parade and fireworks display that was set to take place Tuesday evening.

“It is disappointing,” event coordinator Josh Shaw said in a news release.

“The one thing we cannot control is the weather; however, in situations like this the safety of the fans, participants and staff take priority.”

Organizers say the Queen City Ex will open its gates Wednesday at noon, as scheduled.

Around 6:00 p.m., police had to block off the northbound lane on ring road after a chain link fence got caught on some power lines, interfering with on-coming traffic. Motorists were re-routed for a number of hours while crews cleaned up the mess.

The winds wreaked havoc on highway 2 just outside Moose Jaw, where traffic slowed to a crawl after a camper jack-knifed in the ditch.

Inside the city, the wind ripped branches from trees in a number of areas. Debris could be found blowing around residential streets, and the power was knocked out in a number of areas for several hours.

Winds reportedly gusted up to 101 kilometres an hour in Regina; 98 kilometres an hour in Coronach; 97 kilometres an hour in Assiniboia; 95 kilometres an hour in Rockglen and 89 kilometres an hour in Moose Jaw on Tuesday afternoon.

A low pressure system has dumped 40 to 60 millimeters of rain on southeastern Saskatchewan since Monday. Rainfall amounts were higher in some areas, including Coronach, which received as much as 100 millimeters.

No serious injuries have been reported as a result of the windstorm.
