RCMP say festivalgoers so far have been “very well-behaved” at the Craven Country Jamboree.

A total of 17 people were arrested on the first official day of the country music festival Thursday.

Offences included one assault and one impaired driving incident. There was also a report of a missing girl, who was later found.

Mounties handed out 37 speeding tickets, three licence suspensions and several liquor-related fines.

S/Sgt. Geoff Buxcey said it’s typical to see these types of offences during the four-day festival.

“When there’s liquor involved and these types of events, you’re going to see these kinds of tickets being handed out,” Buxcey told reporters Friday.

“Excessive drinking, of course that draws the police attention and we handle those. It just keeps people safe in the area.”

However, Buxcey added that visitors have generally been “very well-behaved.”

“The weather’s been holding up and I think that’s a big factor,” he said. “It’s allowing people to be more relaxed and enjoying themselves.”

About 50 RCMP officers are working in shifts on the festival grounds, and Mounties have set up temporary prison cells for the event at the nearby Lumsden detachment.
