A former Saskatchewan Roughrider has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and assaulting her boyfriend.

Kennedy Nkeyasen showed no reaction while a judge read out the verdict at Court of Queen's Bench in Regina on Tuesday.

As he was taken into custody and led out of the courtoom, the former CFL free safety blew kisses to two women who were in tears in the gallery.

The court heard that in October 2009, about a month after he and his former girlfriend broke up, Nkeyasen broke into her apartment and hit her boyfriend nine times.

In handing down the sentence, the judge noted Nkeyasen had no previous criminal record and that the risk of him reoffending is "minimal."

Nkeyasen will be prohibited from owning firearms for 10 years and must provide a DNA sample to the national databank.
