After numerous floods over the past few years in communities surrounding the Assiniboine River basin, officials are working on a more permanent solution.

Representatives from North Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba will be coming together Wednesday afternoon for the first Assiniboine River Basin Initiative conference in Regina.

The basin includes areas of the Qu'Appelle, Souris and Assiniboine rivers, and has frequently made headlines after the massive floods of 2011 and 2014.

The three-day conference will be the beginning to forming an organization that will work on water-related issues across the entire basin.

The agenda includes talks about climatic changes, water quality, local issues, drought, and recent flood impacts.
