To a standing ovation from the public gallery, Regina city council almost unanimously rejected an application for a strip club at Monday night’s meeting.

Although the proposal had previously been approved by the city’s planning commission and met all bylaw requirements, council denied it by a vote of 9-1.

Coun. Shawn Fraser was the only one in favour, saying he approved the application because it complies with new provincial laws, though he wants to see clearer regulations for strip clubs. Fraser said people need to acknowledge that the industry already exists in Regina.

Mayor Michael Fougere was among the nine members of council who voted against the application. Fougere said he’s received more than 200 calls and emails to his office, voicing opposition to a strip club setting up shop.
