A student alleges staff at a high school in Lumsden insulted her for wearing gothic makeup.
Grade 11 student Jessica Galbiati wore the makeup to school for the first time last Tuesday.
She says she was called into the principal’s office, where she alleges she was insulted for her look.
“It made me feel horrible,” Galbiati told CTV News. “Why would you tell me that what I'm wearing is inappropriate? I liked it."
In response to the alleged incident, Jessica called on her classmates to stand against bullying during the Monday lunch break.
Jessica’s mother, Tanya Galbiati, said they made a formal complaint to the Prairie Valley School Division and the Ministry of Education.
The school board says there’s no rule against wearing gothic makeup, but they do ask all students and staff to dress “respectfully” in their communities.
Tanya says she is eager for the Saskatchewan government to step in with anti-bullying legislation.
“Something needs to happen,” Tanya said. “This bullying has gotten out of control.
Education Minister Don Morgan says a report on bullying that was originally expected to be released in mid-November will come out as soon as it’s finished.
Morgan says the government plans to wait and see what federal anti-bullying legislation will look like before crafting a provincial bill.
