A Regina substitute teacher has pleaded not guilty to sex-related charges involving a 16-year-old girl.

Robert Rhett Burgess is charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual exploitation and two counts of uttering threats.

A lawyer for the 34-year-old entered the not guilty plea on his behalf in Regina Provincial Court on Thursday.

A one-day preliminary hearing has been set for Nov. 24.

If the court decides there is enough evidence to hold a trial, Burgess has elected to be tried by a Court of Queen's Bench judge and jury.

Burgess was charged in April after the teen alleged she was sexually assaulted at a business in the 2300 block of Dewdney Avenue last October.
