Crews were busy battling two apartment fires in Regina on Friday.

The first blaze broke out in the kitchen of a third-floor suite in a 23-unit apartment complex at 3015 Parliament Avenue in the city's south end shortly before 11 a.m.

Two people who were trapped in the building had to be rescued by firefighters. Crews contained the fire as it spread to the roof, but the building was destroyed.

About an hour after the first fire started, crews were called to another blaze at an apartment building at 85 Cambridge Avenue in the city's east end.

The fire started in the kitchen of one of the units and spread through the roof as firefighters were arriving at the scene.

Both buildings were evacuated and no residents were injured, but one firefighter suffered a fall, officials said.

Bitter cold wind chills hovering around -30 C hampered firefighters in their efforts to extinguish both blazes.

The Canadian Red Cross has set up a reception centre at the Quality Inn, located at 1717 Victoria Avenue, to assist those affected by the fires.
