A driver in central Saskatchewan was able to escape late Friday afternoon before his pickup truck was struck by a train.

RCMP were called to a CN Rail line nine kilometres east of Punnichy, Sask. just before 5 p.m.

A truck that had been hung up on the tracks was hit by a train and flipped upside down into a slough, police said. The 17-year-old driver abandoned the vehicle before it was hit.

Police said the incident occurred in a spot where there was no rail crossing.

The westbound train was not derailed.

The driver of the truck and the train personnel were not injured. RCMP and CN police continue to investigate.

Punnichy is located about 100 kilometres north of Regina.
