A delightful sauce that’s perfect for a holiday turkey. It’s also delicious with soft cheeses like brie or camembert.
Makes about 4 cups
1/3 cup finely diced shallot
1 tbsp oil
1 ½ tsp Chinese five-spice powder
3 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
1 pear, peeled and cut into small dice
½ cup sugar
½ cup honey
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 3 oranges) Salt and pepper, to taste Finely grated zest of ½ an orange
In a medium pot over medium heat saute the shallots in the oil. Add the Chinese five-spice powder and stir for 1 minute to toast the spices. Add the cranberries, pear, sugar, honey, and orange juice. Bring to a boil and simmer until nearly all the cranberries pop and mixture starts to thicken slightly; stir often. Remove from heat, add salt and pepper to taste and the orange zest. Let cool and then refrigerate until ready to use.
