Rabies appears to be on the rise in Saskatchewan.

According to new numbers from the Ministry of Agriculture, in the first half of 2016, 18 animals tested positive for the illness.

Fourteen of those positive tests were in just the past two months.

Those figures are double what Saskatchewan saw last year, when only nine cases of rabies were reported.

In 2014, Saskatchewan saw only seven confirmed cases of rabies.

While the majority of the infected animals were skunks and bats, rabies was also detected in a goat, a lamb, a cow, and a domesticated cat.

Saskatchewan Agriculture is reminding the public that pets and livestock can be vaccinated against rabies, and encourage people to contact their local veterinarian for more information.

Symptoms of rabies in domestic animals include:

  • hiding in isolated places
  • becoming overly excited and aggressive
  • difficulty swallowing
  • partial paralysis in the face and neck
