A semi-truck driver is facing charges after a collision between a semi and an SUV in North Battleford left one man dead.

The crash occurred Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. after a semi travelling westbound lost control at the intersection of Highway 40 and Highway 16, near the city’s Western Development Museum.

The intersection is controlled by traffic lights, RCMP said in a media release. The semi swerved and went through the guardrail separating the west and east lanes of Highway 16, then crashed into an SUV. Both vehicles wound up on the edge of the CN Rail tracks.

The man driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-truck’s driver was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with one count of impaired operation of a vehicle causing death and one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

His next court appearance is set for Thursday.

Both vehicles were cleared from the scene and the roads reopened around midnight.

RCMP have yet to provide information on the SUV driver’s identity.
