Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board are expected to be in North Battleford by late Friday afternoon, to investigate a fatal plane crash that killed a father and son.

RCMP have identified the men as 40-year-old Shane Buchanan, from Whitehorse, who was the pilot,  and his father 63 year old Charles Buchanan.

Shane Buchanan ran an outfitting company in Whitehorse.

A TSB spokesperson says investigators will examine the wreckage of the Piper PA-14 float plane, and interview witnesses, but it is hard to say how long the initial investigation will take.

Witnesses said the plane crashed shortly after taking off from a body of water near the airport Thursday morning. It was headed to Calling Lake, Alberta.

RCMP say the plane burst into flames when it hit the ground.

"Witnesses we have spoken to observed the plane falling down - not in a normal flying pattern," said Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky with North Battleford RCMP. "It wasn't flying down - it appeared to be falling down."
