There is cautious optimism over the future of a long-delayed hotel and condominium development in Regina.

Construction on the Capital Pointe project will begin within the next 10 days, developers announced Tuesday.

“This announcement is a long time coming to the people of Regina,” project director Greg Black said at a news conference. “We think, all around, it’s a very good news project for the city of Regina.”

Edmonton-based ITC Construction Group and Doublestar Drilling have been hired to start the work, which will begin with construction of an underground parkade. The project is slated to be completed within 32 months.

In the six years that have passed since the project was first announced, developers have said several times that construction was about to begin. But, so far, there’s been no activity at the site on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Albert Street.

Ontario-based Augustine Group took over as the project developer in May 2013. At that time, the building was expected to be completed in the summer of 2015.

The former project developer, BrightStar Corp., had received approval to begin construction in May 2010, but the development permit expired after a series of delays. City council later approved a new development permit, which expires this December.
