The Court of Queen’s Bench services in Weyburn are closing.
The provincial government confirmed Monday the court’s registrar’s office will be closing and their files will be handled by the registrar’s office in Estevan.
It’s still unclear whether or not court proceedings will still stay in the community, a spokesperson for the province said the Court of Queen’s Bench will consult with local lawyers and court staff to see what services will be offered in the opportunity city.
The court is housed in the same building as Saskatchewan’s provincial court, which will remain open. Four years ago, the building underwent $8 million in renovations.
Two staff will be affected by the move. A sheriff will be offered a transfer to Estevan, and one administrative assistant position will be lost.
According to the province, less than 1 per cent of Queen’s Bench trials in Saskatchewan’s Court of Queen’s Bench took place in Weyburn.
