Flooding and scorching temperatures have created the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes that may carry West Nile virus.

Saskatchewan is now entering the peak season for West Nile-carrying Culex tarsalis mosquitoes.

With high numbers of mosquitoes expected in the province this year, health officials are urging the public to take extra precautions and use plenty of repellant.

West Nile can cause mild illness, fever, headaches and, in some cases, death.

Meanwhile, Regina could soon be stepping up its fight against mosquitoes.

City council is expected to consider a motion at its next meeting that would increase mosquito control funding by $200,000.
