A natural gas fire that has been burning near Prud'homme since Saturday morning has been significantly reduced.

Crews were able to turn off a side valve at the natural gas transfer station south of the town late Monday night. The valve is believed to have been the main source of the leak.

Secondary fires broke at the well head, and flames are said to be still reaching heights of 12 feet, down from 60 feet over the long weekend.

A TransGas representative said the fire is stable at this point. It’s hoped that the fire will be extinguished later Tuesday, but it could continue burning into Wednesday.
