Officials are urging homeowners near the Qu'Appelle lakes to build up sandbag dikes to guard against waves of floodwater.

John Fahlman of the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority says waves could push water over dikes that don't have a big enough buffer above forecasted peaks.

"Rather than micromanaging to the centimeter exactly how high to protect anything to, you should be adding a couple of feet for wave protection…because it's going to be there for quite a while," Fahlman said.

The watershed authority predicts Mission and Katepwa lakes will rise another 15 centimetres before peaking. Both lakes are at record levels. Echo Lake has plateaued and Pasqua Lake is near its peak.

Last Mountain Lake is expected to rise another 37 centimetres before cresting next week.

Officials say the threat of flooding remains high in the communities of Eastend and Val Marie in southwest Saskatchewan, where snow still has yet to melt.
