Despite lower numbers of West Nile-carrying mosquitoes, health officials are urging the public to take extra precautions as the long weekend approaches.

This is the prime time for the Culix tarsalis mosquitoes that carry the virus.

So far, there have been no reported cases of West Nile in Saskatchewan, but tests are underway on several people in the province.

One case of the virus has been confirmed in North Dakota near the Manitoba border. Officials say it's a definite sign that West Nile is on its way to Saskatchewan, if not already here.

The flood-stricken southeast part of the province is showing the highest mosquito counts.
