Police say a suspicious device found at the Regina airport is not explosive.

The device, which was found during the passenger screening process Monday morning, raised the suspicions of security staff, police said in a news release.

An on-duty police officer with explosives disposals training, who was at the airport on an unrelated matter, agreed that the device posed a potential public safety threat.

The second-floor screening area and nearby areas of the airport were evacuated as a precaution. Operations were shut down at the airport, and all passengers were relocated to the arrivals area. Traffic coming into the airport was rerouted.

The Regina police explosives disposal unit was called in, and the device was transported to a remote, undisclosed location. Investigators determined the object was not an explosive device, police said.

The owner of the device, a 49-year-old woman, is not facing any charges.

According to the airport's website, outgoing flights were delayed for the rest of the afternoon, but officials say incoming flights were still arriving during the shutdown.

Arriving passengers were deplaning on the tarmac and walking into the main floor of the building. The airport brought in pizza and other snacks for impacted passengers.
