Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says competition needs to be considered if there is a potential takeover of Canada's biggest publicly traded grain handler.

There are reports Swiss commodities trader Glencore P-L-C and U.S. agribusiness Cargill are among potential bidders for Regina-based Viterra.

Wall says the province wants to accommodate foreign investment, but he adds it's important to examine the competition issue if the bidder is another grain company.

He says Saskatchewan farmers could have concerns if the choice of who they sell their grain to is limited.

The premier says competition will be part of the province's analysis of a potential takeover, along with the fiscal and economic impacts.

He has said Viterra does not fit Saskatchewan's definition of a strategic resource, like potash.
