Six years have passed since the Capital Pointe project was announced, but the downtown Regina lot where the hotel and condominium high-rise is to be built remains empty.

“We are going to announce next week when construction will actually start,” project director Greg Black told CTV News on Tuesday.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because the builder has said several times before that construction is about to begin at the site, located on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Albert Street.

“I’ll be confident when I actually see some activity on the site that means something,” said Regina Mayor Michael Fougere.

“We’ve heard that in the coming days or weeks that something will happen. Hopefully that’s the case.”

Ontario-based Augustine Group took over as the project developer in May 2013. At that time, the building was expected to be completed in the summer of 2015.

The former project developer, BrightStar Corp., had received approval to begin construction in May 2010, but the development permit expired after a series of delays. City council later approved a new development permit, which expires this December.

“We’d like to see (the project) go forward, of course, and we’re doing what we can to do that,” Fougere said.

“But, at the end of the day, it’s up to the builder to build it.”
