A hundred homes in southeast Moose Jaw are under a drinking water advisory after a water main break.

The broken main was discovered beneath Home Street East on Wednesday. It forced a partial system shutdown and, as a result, tap water in the area is no longer safe to drink, officials said.

The failed water main also runs beneath a railway, which could delay repairs for weeks.

It’s the latest in a recent string of sewer and water line failures in Moose Jaw. Earlier this summer, a sinkhole formed in the middle of the Manitoba Expressway, and a sewage spill in Happy Valley Park several weeks ago is still being cleaned up.

The City of Moose Jaw is working to replace its crumbling system of cast iron pipes, but the upgrades could take years.
