Fire officials have wrapped up their investigation into the deadly house fire that claimed the lives of two toddlers on a northern Saskatchewan First Nation last week.

But because there were few remains from the fire, investigators were unable to pinpoint a cause of the blaze or determine where it started.

Officials say a battery-operated smoke detector was found in the home, but it's not known if it was working at the time.

Two children, a two-year-old boy and an 18-month-old girl, died after a fire broke out at the home on the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation on Feb. 17.

The tragedy sparked outrage across the country when the volunteer fire department in nearby Loon Lake said it did not respond to the fire because the First Nation owed the village about $3,300.
