Ready, set, throw! It’s axe throwing time in Regina.

For anyone looking to get in touch with their inner outdoorsman - or outdoorswoman - Lumberjax Throwing is the answer. The new axe throwing facility combines socializing with target practice. The sport has been hitting all the right marks, with axe throwing facilities opening up across North America.

“We thought it would be super cool if Regina had something like this,” said Matty O’Connell, co-owner of Lumberjax Throwing. “Instead of waiting for a chain to come here, a few of us got together and had the idea and the resources to do it and get it off the ground.”

O’Connell teamed up with Tyson Liske 45 days ago to get the business ready to open its doors to the public. The pair handpicked the staff for their axe throwing venture, including veteran thrower Denys Lemare.

“Axe throwing is a huge part of my life, my excitement, my happiness,” Lemare said. “It’s kind of like my happy place.”

Owners and staff say that safety is their number one priority. Interested axe throwers must sign waivers and go through safety protocol before they’re ready to throw.

“Part of our safety protocol is that you can’t actually drink and throw,” O’Connell said. But, patrons can bring their own liquor and enjoy once they’re finished with the throwing.

No throwing experience is necessary, meaning that anyone can line up to take a whack at a truly Canadian tradition.

“There’s something Canadian about throwing axes at a target,” O’Connell said.
