The federal government has announced a new Canadian Safety and Security Program that will be based in Regina.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay was in the city Sunday to announce the establishment of the program.

It will see several security groups fall under one umbrella. The aim is to strengthen Canada's ability to respond to terrorism, crime, natural disaster and serious accidents.

Ottawa will provide $43.5 million in funding for the program each year. Another $1 million has already been invested in a state-of-the-art lab in Regina that will test programs and activities.
