Police in Saskatchewan issued more than 200 tickets for distracted driving during a monthly traffic enforcement blitz in February.

Of the 245 tickets officers handed out for distracted driving, 184 were for using a cellphone behind the wheel, Saskatchewan Government Insurance said Friday.

Two vehicles were also seized during the blitz. Under new traffic laws that took effect last June, motorists caught using a cellphone while driving for a second time could have their vehicle seized for a week.

In addition, police issued 1,072 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving, 397 for running a red light or stop sign and 301 seatbelt tickets. There were also 75 impaired driving-related offences.

The focus of this month’s traffic enforcement blitz is seatbelts, car seats and booster seats.
