The City of Moose Jaw’s costly plan to replace old cast iron pipes has received plenty of pushback. Now those opposed have forced a referendum. A petition against the plan gained enough signatures to force the vote.

Earlier this year, council approved a plan to have 70 per-cent of the replacement costs covered by general city funds, with the other 30 per-cent to be covered by affected homeowners.

A motion to abandon the financial plan altogether was defeated Tuesday night. Instead, council agreed to let residents decide what the best option is through a referendum.

City administration will now work to come up with question options for the referendum. The vote is set to be held in conjunction with the upcoming civic election in October.
