Saskatchewan RCMP officers are using social media to curb drinking and driving.

Members of the RCMP took to Facebook Saturday, sharing their personal experiences with drinking and driving during their time on the force. The initiative kicked off at 11:00 a.m. The campaign will share 24 stories over 24 hours.

“They’re stories that people will be interested in reading,” said Sgt. Al Hofland. “We hope that they’re going to take away from it the strong message that impaired driving isn’t what people should be doing.”

Last December, Saskatchewan RCMP charged 210 people with impaired driving, including one call per hour between 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. most nights. There were eight fatal collisions in Saskatchewan in December 2015 and RCMP say at least half were alcohol-related.

Saturday marks National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. Officers will spend the day targeting impaired and distracted driving, and seatbelt use across Saskatchewan.

“Impaired driving is entirely preventable,” Sgt. Hofland said. “If you plan on drinking, please do not drive. You’re risking your life, and the lives of others. Everyone has a right to come home safe.”
