A jury trial has begun in Regina for three men accused of killing Shawn Douglas.
Court heard opening statements Thursday from the Crown, laying out its version of the events that led to Douglas’ death in August 2014.
The Crown says Douglas was out with a group at Triple 8 Pizza in east Regina, when they ran into two of the accused, and together they all left, eventually ending up at a home on Toronto Street.
The Crown says things were fine at first, but then two members of the group at the home decided to rob Douglas.
The Crown says Douglas was forced to withdraw money from an ATM before later being forced into the trunk of a Honda Civic.
The Crown says witnesses in the area recorded Douglas being forced into the back of the vehicle, and that the court will see the video.
Once in the trunk, the Crown says the men drove Douglas out of town, where they beat him to death and abandoned his body.
Court also heard brief evidence from a Regina police canine officer, who helped find Douglas' body. The officer described finding a body on a grid road not far from Regina near the town of Zehner.
The Crown plans to call 40 witnesses during the trial, which is expected to last six weeks.
Six people were initially charged with first degree murder in the case. Last month, a 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.
