The University of Regina is dealing with a privacy breach after three computers were compromised in a cyberattack last week.

“We immediately isolated the problem and eliminated it by removing those computers from the university network,” Kim McKechney, executive director of communications for the University of Regina, said Friday.

The university said that there’s no evidence that any personal information has been used maliciously as a result of the breach.

“But, given that it’s within the realm of possibility, we are taking this situation very seriously by doing a fairly thorough follow-up investigation,” McKechney said.

A digital forensic expert will look through the data that is potentially at risk, determining what information was accessed.

“At this point, there’s no evidence that anything has been accessed,” McKechney explained. “This is just something we’re doing to be very, very cautious.”

Students, faculty and staff at the university are encouraged to create strong passwords to help combat the potential for cyberattacks in the future.
