The premiers of Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia are asking Ottawa for more than $1 billion to support port and transportation infrastructure in the region.

The three leaders met for a New West Partnership summit, which focused on the future of the region's transportation system in response to railway backlogs that plagued the Prairies earlier this year.

Western Canadian farmers harvested a record crop of grain but it caused a railway transportation bottleneck in the spring.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says a wide-ranging group of stakeholders came together to have a "frank discussion" on Wednesday and Thursday in Regina.

He says the provinces are committed to improving transport in the Asia-Pacific corridor due to growing trade with Asia.

The New West Partnership was created in 2010 and is an agreement between Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
