A Regina man has been handed a seven-year jail sentence for smothering the toddler son of his former fiance.

Jason Will was found guilty of manslaughter earlier this month in the death of 18-month-old Raime Myers.

The little boy died of a hypoxic brain injury after being suffocated while under the care of Will in July 2009.

Will showed no emotion as Justice Dennis Ball read out the sentence in Court of Queen's Bench on Thursday.

In his decision, Ball noted that Will lacked remorse and has never accepted responsibility for causing the child’s death.

Outside the courthouse, the boy’s great grandmother, Betty Sproule, said while the sentence was reasonable, the family will never have complete closure. The child’s mother, Jessica Myers, had no comment.

Will’s uncle, Bernie Price, said the sentence was unjust and that the family is looking forward to a possible appeal.

The defence had asked for a sentence of four to six years, while the Crown was seeking a 10-year jail term.

As part of his sentence, the 25-year-old will be prohibited from possessing firearms for 10 years. He was also ordered to provide a DNA sample for the national databank.
