A man who pleaded guilty to murdering a gas station attendant in Yorkton has been sentenced to life in prison.
Kyle Furness was charged initially charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of 50-year-old Jimmy Ray Wiebe. Last month, the 20-year-old pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Court heard Furness shot Wiebe point blank in the head on June 20. Furness needed cash to pay for drugs after a failed attempt at robbing a different convenience store.
When he entered the Shell gas station, Furness saw Wiebe reach for the phone. Thinking it would be a 911 call, Furness shot Wiebe in the head twice, then stole cash and cigarettes before fleeing.
In court, Furness described the murder as an unemotional experience. He said the drugs took over and all he could focus on was getting a fix.
Furness won't be eligible for parole for at least 12 years.
