Target has announced it will open two stores in Saskatchewan as part of its plans to convert Zellers locations across Canada.

The U.S. retailer says it will open stores at the Northgate Mall in Regina and The Centre in Saskatoon.

The company says a majority of Zellers locations across all 10 provinces will become Target stores beginning in 2013 after undergoing "extensive renovation."

The stores sit on land controlled by 22 property owners and landlords. Target will give the Hudson's Bay Co. the first half of $1.825 billion it agreed to pay once it finalizes the acquisition of the sites in the coming days.

Target also says it will open its Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, Ont.
