A cab driver left in a coma after a violent stabbing in Regina last month is making strides toward recovery.

Iqbal Singh Sharma is out of his coma and no longer in Regina General Hospital’s intensive care unit, according to his family and a GoFundMe page set up for him and his relatives.

He no longer needs a ventilator. He is off anesthesia medicines. His blood pressure and heartbeat are stable, and he is now able to recognize and shake hands with visitors.

“He is getting better and i (sic) am sure he will recover fast,” an update on the GoFundMe page states.

The 31-year-old was taken to hospital Nov. 24 after he was stabbed three times — including once in the neck — following what police believe was an altercation inside the taxi.

The altercation appeared to continue after the taxi driver, Sharma, stopped and tried to get out of the vehicle, police said shortly after the incident.

Several people were on scene, on the 2100 block of Park Street, trying to help Sharma when police arrived.

Another man was also found hurt at the scene, while a third man was found injured in the area, police said. Both were transported to hospital and at least one has since been released.

A fourth man, a 20-year-old man from Calgary, was taken into custody at a business on the 900 block of Victoria Avenue East. He’s since been charged with attempted murder, according police.

All four men are believed to be connected to the same incident, police said last month.

The president of the cab company Sharma works for told CTV News after the incident the father and husband came to Canada with his wife and three-year-old son three months before the stabbing.

The GoFundMe page has so far raised more than $21,000 for him and his family.
