Simultaneous marches took place around the world Sunday in a call to action on climate change.

Regina was among the cities participating, organizing a protest that drew a crowd of about 100 at the Legislative building.

But across the globe, the numbers were in the thousands.

Over one hundred thousand took to the streets in New York City, including celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo.

The global protest is in advance of the United Nations Climate Summit on Tuesday in New York, where world leaders will address the issue.

Regina's rally may not have brought an overwhelming number of supporters, compared to the one hundred thousand that hit the streets in Manhattan, but those involved say climate change is impacting the province more than ever.

Daniel Johnson, an organizer of the Regina march, explains, “we are having shorter winters that are much colder, hot bursts in the summer that are much hotter than usual, and the rest of the year is all rainy. It’s creating unusualness in just about everything".

Local environmental activists were on the front lines for most of the day, and hope today generates a discussion about climate change action.

The United Nations Climate Summit has invited more than 120 world leaders to address the issue.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will not be in attendance, but is sending his Environment Minister instead.
