Wind chill warnings were issued across all of Saskatchewan on Friday as a blast of frigid Arctic air hit the province.

Environment Canada said dangerous wind chills near -50C were expected overnight and into Saturday.

“It’s going to be bloody cold,” Environment Canada meteorologist John Paul Cragg told CTV News earlier this week.

“The transition from supposed winter to supposed spring is going to be, potentially, the coldest night of the season.”

Temperatures hovered around -40C with the wind chill Friday as blowing snow hit parts of southern Saskatchewan, reducing visibility.

While wind chill values were expected to moderate slightly in the afternoon hours, the extreme cold weather was predicted to last into early next week.

The agency warns that at wind chill values below -50C, frostbite on exposed skin could occur in less than five minutes.
