A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Capital Pointe development on Thursday morning. Dignitaries and officials were on hand at the lot on Victoria and Albert for a ceremonial sod turning.

The hotel and condominium development has garnered some controversy in the six years since it was announced. The developers have announced a number of times that construction would begin, with no evidence of any work on the site.

BrightStar Corp. originally received approval to begin construction on the project in May of 2010, but the development permit eventually expired after a series of delays. In May of 2013, Ontario-based Augustine Group took over as the project manager, and construction was slated to be completed in the summer of 2015. That time came and passed without ground ever being broken at the site.

In late September, project director Greg Black announced that Edmonton-based ITC Construction Group and Doublestar Drilling had been hired to take over the construction of the project.

“This announcement is a long time coming to the people of Regina,” project director Greg Black said at the news conference in September. “We think, all around, it’s a very good news project for the city of Regina.”

Digging began at the site within the first few days of October. Developers now say construction will be completed in 2018.
