A long-term offender designation is being sought for one of two Regina men convicted in a violent robbery spree in the city.

Crown and defence lawyers are jointly seeking a 10-year prison sentence for Marcel Pelletier, followed by a 10-year long-term supervision order after his release.

With credit for time already spent in custody, Pelletier would have 6 ½ years left to serve in jail.

Pelletier, 30, and Joseph Manitopyes, 28, were convicted of several offences in connection with a string of robberies on Sept. 30, 2010.

In a couple of the incidents, two women had their purses snatched in separate Superstore parking lots, and one of them was struck in the head with a metal object when she resisted. The woman suffered three wounds that required stitches.

The two men also robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store and a Subway restaurant, along with one of the customers inside.

The Crown expects to call four witnesses during a hearing this week that could lead to Pelletier being declared a long-term offender.

If a judge finds Pelletier doesn't meet the criteria for a long-term offender designation, he will be sentenced in the usual way.
