The bodies of a missing Saskatchewan man and his dog have been pulled from a dam near Assiniboia.

John Rustad, a 76-year-old man from Bengough, Sask., told his family he was going ice fishing at the Willows Dam, about 10 kilometres east of Assiniboia, Saturday morning. His family never heard from him following the conversation and, shortly after, he was reported missing.

Police found an unknown object below the ice Monday night, and on Tuesday, Rustad’s body was pulled from the water along with his small dog.

The ice was 12 inches thick and the water was three metres deep, RCMP said.

His truck was also found underneath the ice and underwater recovery teams were still working to retrieve the vehicle as of Tuesday afternoon.
