Regina police say they've put a greater emphasis on tracking down those wanted on warrants – and it's paid off.

There are 31 per cent less, or roughly 2,800, people wanted on 68 per cent fewer warrants, according to January crime statistics presented at a Board of Police Commissioners meeting Wednesday.

Police Chief Evan Bray says there were 12,000 outstanding warrants in the city in 2008-09.

"(That’s) lots of warrants, which means lots of people that have not been held to accountable for the crime they've committed,” Bray said. “As a result, we've put together a strategy to tackle this."

There are now 3,600 outstanding warrants in Regina. Bray credits better distribution in warrant workload.
