Statistics Canada says Regina had the highest crime severity index in the country last year.

But despite that dubious distinction, Regina Police Chief Troy Hagen says he believes most residents feel the community is safe.

“Considering where we were (and) where we are today, there’s been significant progress,” Hagen said at a news conference Tuesday.

“But having said that, there’s no question we need to continue to do a lot of work.”

The crime severity index fell six per cent in Regina compared to 2010. Saskatoon, which ranked second on the list, saw a slightly larger decrease of eight per cent.

In terms of the violent crime severity index, Saskatoon was second, while Regina ranked fourth. Both cities saw double-digit decreases in the severity of violent crimes reported to police.

Saskatchewan had the highest crime severity index among the provinces, and the second-highest violent crime severity index behind Manitoba.
