Saskatchewan set a new record for power use as residents cranked up their electric furnaces and space heaters to keep warm during a recent cold snap.

SaskPower says a total of 3,543 megawatts were used at 5:24 p.m. Friday.

Company president and CEO Robert Watson says SaskPower expects to break the record again this winter, given the growth in the province.

Demand for electricity is forecast to increase by six per cent this year alone, compared to the annual average of 1.4 per cent from 2000 to 2010.
