Officials from Saskatchewan and the U.S. will work together to develop a plan to manage dams in the Souris River Basin.

The announcement follows a meeting Thursday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' district headquarters in St. Paul, Minn.

Saskatchewan has obligations to provide a level of flood protection for the U.S. under the 1989 International Agreement for Water Supply and Flood Protection in the Souris River Basin.

In October, a report by the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority revealed Alameda Dam in the southeast corner of the province may not provide adequate flood protection when it exceeds capacity.

The province says the working group, which includes officials from North Dakota and U.S. Fish and Wildlife, will develop plans for 2012 for flood protection and spring runoff.
