The Saskatchewan Liberal Party has acclaimed a new leader.

Regina resident Darrin Lamoureux was the sole candidate when nominations closed Aug. 8.

He is to be confirmed as leader at the party's annual general meeting this fall in Regina.

Lamoureux says he wants to bring a fresh voice to Saskatchewan's political scene and present a Liberal alternative to voters in the next election, which is expected in April 2016.

The Liberals have not won a seat in the provincial legislature since the 1999 election.

The party has been functioning under interim leaders, including Lamoureux, since March 2012.
