The Saskatchewan Transportation Company is increasing its bus fares by nearly  five per cent.

Starting April 1, the average fare will go up $1.45, based on an average one-way trip of 187 kilometres.

Company CEO Shawn Grice says the 4.76 per cent increase is being implemented due to rising costs.

"STC fares are affordable and comparable to average rates in Western Canada and we believe that people who try our service once are very likely to become repeat riders," Grice said in a release.

The Crown-owned bus line's last passenger rate increase was about two years ago.
